The History of South Carolina in the Building of the Nation is over 150 years in the making. It all began in 1840 when William Gilmore Simms, a renowned writer and historian of the 19 th century, began putting together a history of South Carolina to be used in schools. The tradition was continued by his granddaughter, Mary C. Simms Oliphant, and his Great Granddaughter, Mary C. Simms Oliphant Furman (who assisted in this latest edition). The torch has now been passed to Archie Vernon Huff, Jr., a professor of history at Furman University for over thirty years. He has taken Simms’ original South Carolina history and brought it back to life. It served as a great resource in South Carolina schools for generations, and hopefully it can be a great resource for generations more.
